Health of The Urban Poor Program (HUP)

 BACKGROUND

The Goal of HUP Program is to improve the health status of the urban poor in the urban locations by adopting effective and efficient sustainable starategic intervention apporaches adopting the principle of convergence of the various development programs.

Objectives of the Program :

  1. Provide quality technical assistance to the GOI, states and cities for effective implementation of The National urban Health Mission (NUHM).
  2. Expand Partnerships in Urban Health including engaging the commercial sector in PPP activities.
  3. Promote the convergence of different GOI urban health and development efforts.
  4. Strengthen urban planning initiatives by the state through evidence-based city-level Demonstration and learning efforts.

To accomplish these objectives PFI led consortium envisages to provide technical assistance to the national, state, local Governments, other agencies and to forge linkages with other USAID-supported partners, donors and development partners supporting urban health activities in india and bringing more focused policy attention towards health of the urban poor.

This program is being implemented in eight states (Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattigarh and Rajastan) and in five cities (Delhi, Bhubneswar, Pune ,Jaipur and Agra) in India.

Under City Demonstration Program PFI is implementing the City Demonstration Program in Bhubaneswar and two other cities i. e. Delhi and Agra. Pune is being implemented by plan India and city of  Jaipur is being implemented bu Bhoruka charitable Trust. The five cities have been chosen for developing city demonstation health programs for learning, testing and documenting the urban health strategies. These three will offer scope for focusing on different thematic areas of urban health and developing successful models to be documented and disseminated. The learning from the city demonstration programs will be used for providing technical assistance to the MOHFW and the governments of EAG states to strengthen the strategies of NUHM/urban health components of NRHM.

Major achievements of Health of the Urban Poor Program 2011-2013

Health of the Urban Poor (HUP) program is implemented in 24 slums of Agra city in the area of Jagdishpura,Bodla and Sikandra with population of 52263 in 10974 families since October,2011.We are covering 642 pregnant women,1140 infants and 7556 eligible couples in our intervention under HUP. We have formed 20 MAS in our intervention area to strengthen the community for ownership. We have visited 113058 households for counseling in our intervention i.e. 6807 counseling visits to pregnant women, 6551 counseling visits to lactating women,9893 visits to infants,23538 visits to 1-5 yrs children and 76324 visits to eligible couples. During UHND we have facilitated beneficiaries to avail health and nutrition services ever since we have facilitated services to 771 pregnant women,1306 lactating women,1283 infants,2146 (1-5 yrs) children and 3961 eligible couples.

 Mapping and Listing:-

We have completed listing and Mapping of the all 25 slums in the month of November,2011.We have listed 8252 structures in  these slums.Mapping of these slums has been completed.Listing and mapping was carried out with the help of Link Workers.Slum boundries were decided with the stakeholders and local residents.

Catchment area mapping and defining:-

HUP staff had been given orientation and training in Agra organized by PFI in the month of November, 2011.They were oriented in the training on the goals and objectives of HUP program. The field visit organized in the training was very fruitful as we got good understanding on listing and mapping, house hold survey and health recourse mapping. Field exposure during the training was very effective to understand the listing and mapping, HH survey to be carried out in the respective cities. We have marked the boundaries of the slums and their catchment area.

House Hold Survey:-The survey was carried out in the month of  December,11 and January,12.

Link workers selection:-

We have selected all 20 link workers in the month of December,2011 and they have started their activities in their respective slums.We have divided them in three clusters.Two clusters have 7 link workers each and one cluster have 6 link workers.

LWs selection process :- We are selecting the LWs through following steps :-  Organise a community meeting  and gave introduction of the project.Identify  some volunteers to  be  LW through  community meeting.Short  list the potential voluteers to be LW.Finalise the volunteer as LW through community vote.

Stakeholder identification and Sector Meeting:-

We have identified all Health visitors and AWWs in our project areas.We have introduce our LW s to the stake holders.Cluster coordinators have participated in the sector meetings. They have discussed about Swasthya Diwas and listed the fix day of Immunization in the meeting.31 AWWs and LWs  were present in the meeting.Ms Sunita Naag,Sector Supervisor,ICDS was heading the meeting. Project staff identified the stakeholders during their field visit.25 AWCs, 5 ward members are in the project area. We have visited local health service providers, Aagan Wadi Centres, Ward members and other local leaders to seek their support in the program. We visited DTHC Hari Parwat to develop linkages with the govt. Counterparts in the month of November-December,2011

Resource mapping:-

We have organised stakeholders meetings in February and March,12 to prepare the resourse map of the slum.Stakeholders from the different Govt. deptt and community members participated in the meetings.They draw a  map of the slum and display resources i.e. health centre,AWC,Panchayti bhawan,schools etc in the map.We have organised  25 stakeholder meetings in the 25 slums and prepared a resource map of the slum. Dr.Anupam Bhasker ACMO participated in the meeting.Health visitors,Mukhya Savika,Teachers,Sanitory inspector and others stakeholders have participated in the meetings.

Mahila Aarogya Samiti (MAS) Formation

We have formed 20 MAS in our intervention area during the quarter of April-June,2012. The slums are Nagla Ber,VikramNagar,Shyam Nagar,Mohamadpur,Kishorepura,Bai Ka Bazar,Sarai Bega, Baipur,Jagdishpura,Nai Awqadi Bodla,Ram Nagar,Nagla Ajita,Subhashpuram,Rajeev Nagar,Bai Ka Bazar,Pathar Ghoda,Mahal and Mahaur Nagar.

Film shows:-

We have covered 3 slums in a show therefore we have covered 24 slums of the intervention area in these shows. One Show was planned in one day. The show started at 11:00 am. The film was based on Pregnant and new born care. Different messages were given in film. Total 26 film shows were organized in the program period. We asked questions in between the film show to the audience and appropriate answers were gifted with prizes. Total 130 women were rewarded in the event.

MAS member training:-

We organised one day training on March, 23, 2012 and March, 24, 2012 of the members of MAS. Members of MAS from 7 and 8 slums participated respectively in the training. We organized one day training on September, 27, 2012, August, 11, 13 and 14, 2012 and July, 25, 26 and 30, 2012 of the members of MAS. 25, 70 and 56 Members of MAS from 17 slums respectively participated in the training and June, 18 to 23, 2012, May, 15 to 17, 2012 and April, 21 to 25, 2012 of the members of MAS. 128,45 and 69 Members of  MAS from 16 slums respectively participated in the training during the quarter. The period of the training was 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. Introduction of the project Health of The Urban Poor (HUP) was given by Mr. Ravi Kashyap, President, SNBS in a detail to the participants. He discussed about the Goal, Objectives of the programme.Ms.Mamta and Khushbu took the session on Mahila Arogya Samiti (MAS).He built capacity of the participants on role and responsibility of MAS and need to form the MAS.Capacity was built on program capacities of MAS. Introduction of the project Health of The Urban Poor (HUP) was given by Mr. Ravi Kashyap, President, SNBS in a detail to the participants.Mr. Rajeev Kumar discussed about the Goal, Objectives of the programme. We have participated in MAS meeting.Till September,2013 we have built capacity of  all 20 MAS on  Identification of pregnancy and checkups, Care during pregnancy, High risk pregnancy, Danger sign during pregnancy, Birth planning for safe delivery, 5 Cleans during emergency,danger sign during delivery,post natal care, After delivery examine the new born  at 30 seconds and 5 minutes,essential new born care,hypothermia, Breast feeding,Immunization,Examination and management of high risk status of LBW or pre term babies, Assessement of sick child,identification of fever and its classification,identification of Diarrhoea and its treatment,Management of ARI and its treatement,Home Visit to new born, Manstrual cycle and process of fertilization,methods of family planning,Condom,OCP,ECP, Injectables,Copper-T,conventional methods of family planning,permanent methods of family planning,myths regarding family planning methods, Complementry feeding,growth monitoring,child malnutrition,Anemia,Govt schemes and programs for nutrition.

QTR MAS meeting:-

We have organized 43 meeting in the period.The meetings were organized in New Awadi Bodla, Baipur, Bhola Ka Nagla, Ram Nagar, Jagdishpura, Mahaur Nagar, Nai Awadi Bodla, Pathar Ghoda, Mahal, Mohamadpur and Ram Nagar,Rajeev Nagar, Nagla Ber, Sarai Bega, Vikram Nagar, Mohamadpur, Bai Ka Bazaar,Nagla Ajita, Bodla Sarai, Kishorepura, Subhaspuram and Mahal.

Points for the discussion were:-

  • Identification of pregnant women.
  • Identification of High risk pregnant women and timely referral in emergency.
  • Lethal Diseases in 0-1 year children.
  • Counseling of Eligible Couples.
  • Use of IEC materials in the MAS meetings.
  • Demonstration of Snake Ladder game.
  • Risk pooling.
  • Use of Health resource Map.

Community Meeting:-

We have organized 160 community meetings in the intervention area during the period. We discussed MCHN and WATSAN issues with the community women. We discussed about new born care and Care during pregnancy and ANC, PNC and INC.Participants in the meetings were app. 3990.

World Water Day celebration:-

World Water Day was celebrated on March, 22, 2012.We organized a rally to mark the day. The rally covered 5 slums of our project area Nagla Ber, Nagla Ajeeta, Kishorepura, Jagdishpura and Ram Nagar Rally was flagged off by Mr.Bahadur Singh, Local Ward Member. The rally was leaded by the Dhol and National Flag. Band cart was following the procession. Link Workers and community women were holding the slogan templetes. The rally was started at 9:30 am. It was started from Nagla Ajita and end up at Community Centre, Jagdishpura.Ms Vidhya Devi  Ward Member addressed the rally and hailed the community women to save water. Buddhist religious leader Vimal Sagar drew attention for the griming situation of water availability.

World Water Day was celebrated on March,22,2013 at Sita Ram Ki Bagichi,Nagla Ber,Agra.Films regarding water conservation and proper handling of water was shown in the celebration. The message of the movie was ‘every drop of water is crucial and preserves it for future’. Movie Din badlenge shows the struggle of slum dwellers for proper hygiene. It shows the hazards of poor hygiens and risk of water hatching from the nearby area. Movie Pani ki Jugad shows the means of the slum dwellers for water. They even fight for water and they do not get it as per their requirement.Another movie Haule Haule gave message regarding proper birth spacing and marriage at proper age.

Review meeting of CCs and Link Workers:-

We have organised 23 review meeting in the project period to analyse the progress of the project. Programme activity plan on new format of  LWs for the months was prepared in the meeting.Different programme activities were included i.e.Community meeting ,HH visit,MAS meeting and God bharai & Aanprasan.We discussed Monther and Child tracking format and Birth spacing format.Queries regarding the register were addressed.New Daily diaries were distributed to the LWs.We would ensure participation in the Urban Health and Nutrition Day in the intervention area.IEC materials were distributed in the meeting.We have given orientation on using of the  IEC materials. New Daily diaries were distributed to the LWs.Different programme activities were included i.e.HH visit,MAS meeting/training  and God bharai & Aanprasan in the tour plan.We discussed on

  • Daily diaries to be mainted and timely reporting must be submitted to concern CC by 27th of every month.
  • We would ensure participation in the Urban Health and Nutrition Day in the intervention area.
  • Participation of CC in MAS meeting in a month for support to the MAS and capacity building.
  • Feed back was given on summary of monthly activities.
  • New incentive based honorerium plan.

Participation in Urban Health and Nutrition Day(UHND)

Cluster Coordinators and Link Workers participated in  205 UHND in the project period.The slums are Satnam Nagar,Vikram Nagar,Jagdishpura,Nai Awadi Bodla,Pathar Ghoda,Bai Ka Bazar,Baipur, Sarai Bega,Mohamadpur,Baipur,Nagla Ber, RamNagar and Nagla Ajita.Vaccination of different vaccine was done by Health Visiters.

  • Health and Nutrition counselling was given by HV to pregnant women and 0-1 yr child.
  • Adolescent girls were also vaccinated for TT.

Link Workers Training:-

Link Worker’s three days training was organised on 28-30/12/2011.We have built capacity of LWs regarding goal,objectives of HUP program.Ms.Pushpa Mahaur built their capacity on MAS and health resource map.

We have organized III round and IIrd Link Workers training on June,11 to June,13,2012 and May,07 to May,09,2012.

One day training of Link Workers was organized on May, 04.2012 at Hotel Gateway. Capacity was built up of link workers on mother and child tracking register.

Half day refresher training of Link Workers was organized on July, 27.2012 at Hotel Gateway. Capacity was built up of link workers on mother and child tracking register.

Three days training of LWs was organized on Family planning and WASH issues on 24-26, September, 2012.

Three days training was organized at Moti Palace,Agra on Nutrition for Link Workers on January, 10-12,2013. Dr.Anupam Bhasker,District Immunization Officer inaugurated the training with lightening the lamps before Lord Budhha. Dr. Bhasker gave details of the upcoming measles campaign and appreciated our LWs and CCs efforts for improving immunization coverage in the intervention area.

Three day training of LWs was organized on April, 22-24,2013 at Nagla Ajita on PRA.

Refresher training on MCTS register was organized on May, 25, 2013. The training was facilitated by Dr. Jatin.

POU training was  was organized on June, 03-05, 2013. The training was facilitated by Mr. Meraj,Mr. Anil and Dr. Himani.

Nutrition Day Celebration

We planned the event two weeks in advance of the day. Govt. stakeholders were informed regarding the event. Integrated Child Development Services schemes (ICDS), Distt. Health and Family Welfare Deptt. and others were informed through letters prior to the event. They instruct their staff as per paln.We identified the slums of the intervention area to be covered through the event. The event covered 12 slums of the project area. The slums covered were Nagla Ber, Nagla Ajita, Kishorepura, Jagdishpura and Ram Nagar, Satnam Nagar, Vikram Nagar, Hukmi Nagar, Bodla Sarai, Mahaur Nagar, Geeta Puram and Nai Awadi Bodla.

We  organized the event at Panchsheel Community Centre, Nagla Ajita on 15.06.2012. The celebration was started at 10:30 am. Film show and workshop was organized to mark the day.The event was inaugurated by the presidents of the MASs of the different slums. Presidents of 5 MAS were placed on the dias.They event was started with the introduction of the participants.

Activities in the event: – We have many activities in the event.

Film Show: – Films regarding nutrition status and nutritional practices were shown in the celebration. The message of the movie was ‘we can prevent malnutrion in the mother and child by taking preventives measures’. We can fight malnutrition by get aware of mal dietary practices. Another film Nanhi Si Jaan was shown to aware the audience regarding mother and child care.

Workshop on Nutrition status in the community:-100 Participants from the different stakeholders AWWs and community people& Link Workers participated in the workshop. Members from the Mahila Arogya Samiti (MAS) participated in the workshop.

Ms.Sunita Sharma, Mukhya Sevika, ICDS addressed the participants and told them that nutritional status of the girl child is poorer then the boy child in the slum community. She hails the participants to take care of Girl child.

              Ms.Rajkumari Raj, Mukhya Sevika, ICDS emphasized on timely immunization of child and mother.

World Health Day Celebration

World Health Day was celebrated on April, 06, 2013 at Mohamadpur.

Activity in on the day: –

Film Show: – Films regarding health behavior was shown in the celebration. The message of the movie was ‘Health is assets for everybody’. Movie Din badlenge shows the struggle of slum dwellers for proper hygiene. It shows the hazards of poor hygiens and risk of water hatching from the nearby area.Another movie Haule Haule gave message regarding proper birth spacing and marriage at proper age.

Sharing of the experiences:-MAS members shared their experiences regarding poor health can leads to death. Ms. Munni ji from Ram Nagar shared her experience.

Breast Feeding Week Celebration

The event covered 4 slums of the project area.The slums are Jagdishpura,Shyam Nagar.Pathar Ghoda and Bai Ka Bazar.The event was organised on August,02,03,05 and 07,2013.

Quiz Competition:-We organized quiz competitions in the above slums. 12 Questions related with breast feeding to be answered by the participants. Participants were from MAS members and community women.8  winners were selected from the each competition. Gifts were given to them.

Rewarding of the winners:- We asked questions in the competition to the audience and appropriate answers were gifted with prizes. We asked 12 questions in the each event and gifted 8 participants for the right answer. Total 32 women were rewarded in the event.

We organised 4 film shows were organized in the week on August 3, 4, 6 and 7, 2012 at Baipur, Ram Nagar, Mahaur Nagar and Nagla Ajita respectively. We showed films Nanhi Si jaan and Child Crawl. The audience of the films was MAS members and Community women. The messages of the films was be early initiation of breast feeding, colostrums feeding, exclusive breast feeding and stimulation of new born for breast feed.

Health Camp:-

We have organized 15 health camps in the quarter on 9th of every month to provide health care and Ante Natal Care to the pregnant women of the community. The camp was organized with the support of Rainbow Hospital Pvt.Ltd, Agra. The camp was organized at Rainbow Hospital, Sikandra, Agra. The camp was started at 11:00 am. The camp was end up at 1:00 pm.7 health camps were organised in the project period with support of  Deptt of Community Medicine,SN Medical College,Agra.

 Ante Natal Checkups(ANC)

Dr. Narendra Malhotra, Professor and Dr.Parul Mittal, MD, diagnosed the pregnant women.  pregnant women provided ANC.

Pathological Services

Pathologists examine the pregnant women for BMD.BMI and Hb testing. Weighting of the pregnant women was taken at the pathology counter. Blood Pressure of the pregnant women was taken at the counters.

Dr.Renuka Dang gave tips for diet during pregnancy.Dr. Dev Prakash gave tips of Yoga for the pregnant women.

We have organized 7 health camp in the quarter with the support of Distt.Health and Family welfare Deptt. and SPM deptt.S.N.Medical college.

Stakeholder Sensitization

We have organized a stakeholder sensitization meeting at ICDS office of Agra city, Project on May, 24, 2012.We discussed regarding AWW one day orientation and selection of AWC for Aan Prasan and God Bharai celebration. Five AWCs were selected for the event. The AWCs were Kishorepura, Nagla Ajita, RamNagar, Satnam Nagar and Nai Awadi Bodla. The celebration will be organized on every IIIrd Thursday of the month.

AWW orientation

We have organized one day orientation of AWWs on May, 30, 2012 at Awadh Banquet hall, Sanjay Place, Agra.Chief Guest to inaugurate the orientation was Dr.Anupam Bhasker; District Immunization Officer (DIO).Guest of Honor was Ms.Kamlesh Gupta, District Programme Office (DPO), ICDS.We gave introduction of the program and SNBS.

Healthy Baby Show:-

LWs, AWW and MAS members identified the participants for the show. Distt Health and Family welfare department and ICDS were coordinated to provide support during the show.

9 AWWs named Ms. Anita, Madhupesh, Savitri, Rajeswari, Tulsi, Lalitesh, Anita, Shiva and Premlata of the areas were participated in the show and facilitated the contestants. We have weighing scales for weighing of the contestants. Contestants were screened at slum level by LWs in primary stage. Then shortlisted were come to the show. All 21 contestants were weighted.

Criteria for the identification of healthy baby:-

We had laid down 3 criteria for the contestants.The criteria’s were:-

  • Child should be below 1 yr of age.
  • Parents should have only two children.
  • Immunization as per age should be complete.

Total 21 children participate in the show. The immunization cards were checked for assessing their immunization status. Three children were selected as per criteria and weight as per age.

The committee of Dr. Rakesh Agnihotri, Ms. Harpyari, Ms.Dulari, HV and Ms.Anita, AWW decided the winners of the show.

Aan Prasan and God Bharai ceremony

We have organized 65 ceremonies in the project period in  slums of  the Agra City. The slums covered were Ram Nagar, Nagla Ajita, Nai Awadi Bodla, Satnam Nagar and Kishorepura.

The ceremony was organized at Aagan Wadi Centre (AWC) of their slum. The ceremony was started at 11:00 am and end up at 01:00 pm. Total 450 pregnant women have God Bharai ceremony and 438 children below 1 year have Aan Prasan in the ceremony. Ceremony was enjoyed by the participants and MAS members and community women.

Jaipur HUP city team had exposure visit in our intervention area on 20-21,September,2012.They visited Saraswati MAS,Nagla Ajita and Dr.B.R.Ambedkar MAS,Jagdishpura during the visit to understand risk pooling carried out by the MAS

.Exposure visit:-

BBSR team of 17 persons had exposure visit in our intervention slum Kishorepura and Ram Nagar on April,18,2013. UHND was observed in Kishorepura slum and Aan Prasan & God Bharai was observed in Ram Nagar slum. They interacted with Ram Nagar MAS regarding risk pooling and referral.

We had an exposure visit from Hope World Wide team in the month.Team of 35 participants from MAS and project team was lead by Ms. Amruta Valli on August,14,2013. Kishorepura one of the slum of our intervention area was visited by the team.Jai Guru Dev MAS gave them exposure for their functioning. AWC was visited by the team.Ms. Rajeswari,AWW told them the services given at the AWC and information regarding UHND.

             We did an exposure visit to understand the innovations in the program in the city Bhuvneswar on July 11-12,2013.

Children Day Celebration:

Children day was celebrate on November, 17, 2012 at Baipur. Film regarding child anxiety for today education system was shown in the celebration. The message of the movie was ‘every child is special and should be treated in special ways’. We can fight with children dilemma for today education system and help them to overcome of these issues. Film Taare Zamin Par was shown to aware the audience regarding children confusion for the education.

Healthy baby show was organized in the celebration to aware the community regarding infant care.

Criteria for the identification of healthy baby:-

We had laid down 3 criteria for the contestants.The criteria’s were:-

  • Child should be below 1 yr of age.
  • Parents should have only two children.
  • Immunization as per age should be complete.

Total 15 children participate in the show. The immunization cards were checked for assessing their immunization status. Three children were selected as per criteria and weight as per age.

Review Visit:-

Review visit by Dr. mainak Chatergee,Dr. Swati Mahajan and Dr. Jatin was done on April,03,2012.

Review visit to cross check HH survey was done by Dr. Jatin on October, 20, 2012.During the visit Dr. Jatin visited Nagla Ber, Ram Nagar, Kishorepura, Geetapuram, Bhola Ka Nagla and Pather Ghoda.

Review visit was on March,20-21,2013 by Mr. Rajiv and Dr. Jatin.

Review visit by  Dr Phanindra Babu, Program Director- HUP and Mr. Sunil Kumar- Grants Manager on September,5-6,2013.

Vaccination session with support of  other stakeholders

We have organized 40 immunization sessions in the project period. The slums covered were Bodla Sarai, Mahaur Nagar, Nai Awadi Bodla,Sarai Bega,Rajeev Nagar,Nagla Ber and Nagla Ajita. Moolwati gave vaccination to the beneficiaries. Vaccines were facilitated by Deptt. of Health and Family welfare, Agra. The details of the vaccination is as below:

MAS and Service provider linkage meeting

Health service providers and MAS coordination meeting was organized on May,22,2013 at Sita Ram ki Bagichi,Nagla Ber.The topics of the meetings were:-

Referral form MAS.

Concession in fee for the patients refer by MAS.

Other.

MAS and service provider meeting was organized on 26.02.2013 at Panchsheel Community Hall, Nagla Ajita. The discussion points were:-

Introduction of HUP program.

Subsidizing cost of treatment for patients refer by MAS.

Demonstration of Health resource map and MCTS registers was done in the meeting.

Ward Coordination meeting

We have organised 12 WCC meetings in the project period in the ward no. 68,78,53, 1,14 and 19 . The topics of the meetings were:-

  • Presentation of Last quarter progress.
  • Sharing of Activity plan for the next quarter.
  • Importance of MAS in the committee.
  • Introduction of HUP program.
  • Formation of ward coordination committees.

D-type coordination meeting.

We have organized D-type coordination meeting on  on March, 07, 2013 at Panchsheel Community Hall, Nagla Ajita. Health visitor, MOIc, LWs, MAS members participated in the meeting.

The discussion points were:-

Introduction of HUP program.

Introduction of the respective Health Visitor with MAS and LW.

Health ICDS coordination meeting

We have organized Health ICDS coordination meeting on March, 07, 2013 at Panchsheel Community Hall, Nagla Ajita. Health visitor, MOIc, LWs, MAS members and Aganwadi Workers participated in the meeting.

The discussion points were:-

  • Introduction of HUP program.
  • Introduction of the respective Health Visitor with MAS, AWW and LW.
  • UHND schedule was drafted in the meetings.

MAS sammelan

MAS’ sammelan was organized on March, 08, 2013.The sammelan will be organized at Panchsheel Community Hall, Nagla Ajita. We planned the event two weeks in advance of the day. Govt. stakeholders were informed regarding the event. Integrated Child Development Services schemes (ICDS), Distt. Health and Family Welfare Deptt. and others were informed through letters prior to the event. Programme of the activities was shared with CMO, ACMO, DPMU, DPO, CDPO and other government officials. They instruct their staff as per plan. We invite all the MAS members to participate in the sammelan. All the 24 slums of the intervention area were covered in the event. The sammelan will be organized from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The participants were 280.

A rally was organized to generate awareness among the community regarding women empowerment and roles and responsibilities of  MAS. 5 slums of Agra city would be covered by the rally namely are Nagla Ajita, Ram Nagar, Nagla Ber, Kishorepura and Jagdishpura. MAS’ members will participate in the rally. The rally had app. 250 participants. The rally started at 8:30am and end at 10:00am.

MAS, performing well were rewarded in the sammelan. Excellent performing link workers were rewarded in the sammelan as well. Gifts were distributed as per their performance.3 MAS and 3 Link Workers were rewarded in the event. We honored 5 women i.e. Dr. Nirmla Yadav, CMO,Dr. Renu Agarwal, Assit. Professor, SPM, Ms. Harpyari and Ms. Dulari, Health Visitor and Ms. Sharda Vimal for their efforts of women empowerment.

MAS named Gautam Bauddh Mahila Aarogya Samiti, Patthar Ghoda which was formed under Health of the Urban Poor Project (HUP) with support of Sri Niroti Lal Budhha Sansthan (SNBS) has shown unity is power. Patthar Ghoda is one of the oldest slums of Agra city. It is Near by the sector 16A.The source of income was the shoe laboring in the slum. Male of the family worked in the shoe manufacture units and females do house hold work and shoe upper knitting for family support. The MAS was formed with the objective of improvement of Maternal and child health in their slum, in the month of March, Dated 05, 2012 and meet on every Wednesday after noon.SNBS has built their capacity on health issues and aware the members regarding the hazards of the poor sanitation conditions, drinking water and risk pooling. The MAS members faced many problem related to Drinking water and Sanitation and maternal care issues. The MAS members developed a risk pooling fund to address these issues and help financially mother and child during emergency.Sapna w/o Shashi kapoor lives in the slum for the last some time.Sapna has given timely ANC and TT vaccination in her gestation period. At the time of delivery she needs some financial support. She asked the MAS for support in her emergeny.At that time MAS come forward and lend her Rs.700/- for Checkup. Sapna was blessed with a girl child on December, 06, 2012. It was her Second baby. It was a normal delivery.Sapna and Shashi kapoor was very happy to get a princess in their family. They were obliged to the MAS for their timely support.MAS from Patthar Ghoda established an example for other regarding risk pooling for mother and child issues.

Jagdishpura is one of the oldest and densely populated slums of Agra city. It is app. 3 Km from district head quarter. The source of income was the shoe laboring in the slum. Male of the family worked in the shoe manufacture units and females do house hold work with shoe upper knitting. The MAS was formed with the objective of improvement of Maternal and child health in their slum, in the month of March,03, 2012 and meet at every Thrusday.SNBS has built their capacity on health issues and aware the members regarding the hazards of the poor sanitation conditions, drinking water and risk pooling. The MAS members faced many problem related to Drinking water and Sanitation and maternal care issues. The slum members developed a risk pooling fund to help financially mother and child during emergency.Sapna w/o Anil lives in the slum for the last some time.Sapna has given timely ANC and TT vaccination in her gestation period. At the time of delivery she needs some financial support. She asked the MAS for support in her emergeny.At that time MAS come forward and lend her Rs.1000/- for delivery. Members from MAS i.e. Narayani Devi, Madhu Malti and Omvati ji accompanied her to the Garima hospital, Bodla with our Link Worker.Sapna was blessed with a girl child on September, 15, 2012. It was her first baby. It was a normal delivery.Sapna and Anil was very happy to get a princess in their family. They were obliged to the MAS for their timely support.MAS from Jagdishpura established an example for other regarding risk pooling for mother and child issues.

Unity has power it is been shown by the strong example of slum Nagla Ajita where a MAS named Saraswati Mahila Aarogya Samiti was formed under Health of the Urban Poor Project  with support of Sri Niroti Lal Budhha Sansthan (SNBS). Nagla Ajita is one of the oldest slum of Agra city. It is app.5 Km from district head quarter. The MAS was formed with the objective of improvement of Maternal and child health in their slum, in the month of April, 2012 and meet at every Wednesday.SNBS has built their capacity on health issues and aware the members regarding the hazards of the poor sanitation conditions and drinking water. The MAS members faced many problem related to Drinking water and Sanitation issues. The slum has water lodging problem for years that hamper their travel during health emergency. Since it is the problem of the whole slum so Samiti has discussed these issues in their weekly meeting and want to resolve them through Nagar Nigan.MAS passed a resolution to discuss these issues with the local ward member Mr.Jitendra Parasar. In this sequence they placed a letter of these reference to Mr.Jitendra Parasar, Local ward member on September, 19, 2012.They urged Mr.Jitendra for resolve their problems. Mr.Jitendra assured them to look into the matter and see the situation personally. Mr.Jitendra visited the slum of Nagla Ajita on October, 23, 2012 and saw the grim situation of poor sanitation facilities and drinking water. He wanted to organize a community meeting on October, 28, 2012 and discussed these issues in that meeting with the community people. On October, 28, 2012 the community meeting was organized in the presence of Local Media persons at Panch sheel, Community centre, Nagla Ajita. Mr.Jitendra promised the community in the meeting that these problems will be resolved in the next few months as he will place a resolution in the Nagar Nigam session and release of budget for the work. He will install hand pumps and construct community toilets to resolve the problem.MAS has play a crucial role in advocating these issues with the stake holders and hopefully their problems will be resolved in upcoming months.
